As you consider replacing your siding, you may wonder about the best option for your home. Today the main types of siding on homes today are vinyl, wood and fiber cement. Of those, vinyl and wood were the most common 20 years ago. Today vinyl and fiber cement lead replacement siding sales but cellular siding is another option. However, all have their advantages and disadvantages.
Today’s vinyl siding is vastly different than that made 15 or 20 years ago. It looks more like real wood than ever before. Today’s vinyl siding resists stains and fades less than older siding. Of all siding options, it’s the one with the least maintenance requirements. Add to the fact that it’s also available in more colors and styles and you have countless options for an exterior home makeover. It’s also the least expensive of the main options.
It’s not perfect, vinyl siding won’t last as long as the other common siding options. It also is susceptible to mildew. Hail and wind can also damage vinyl siding more easily than other materials.
Most homeowners we speak with about types of siding tell us right away that they don’t want wood siding. They are tired of the constant maintenance and repainting. Another issue with wood siding is that it is susceptible to pests. However, it’s rarely damaged by wind or hail and, assuming you take good care of it, it will last for decades.
Fiber Cement Siding
Fiber cement siding is a popular option. However, it’s not available in as many options as vinyl siding. It’s also more expensive. However, like vinyl, pests aren’t interested in it. And, like wood, it can’t be damaged by hail and rarely by wind. It does still require maintenance including repainting, just not as often as wood. Some insurance companies offer a discount on homeowner’s insurance because it’s also more fire resistant than wood or vinyl siding.
This new to the market product can’t be compared to any one other siding product. Its appearance is virtually indistinguishable from wood. However, it never requires repainting. It has low maintenance like vinyl siding, but is virtually impact resistant making it durable like fiber cement siding. You’ll find cellular siding in many colors and styles like vinyl. Why isn’t this the option of choice? It’s the most expensive.
