Now that spring is here, hopefully to stay, it’s time to get started on your exterior home maintenance. One of the most important tasks is inspecting and cleaning your gutters. Gutters are an integral part of your roofing system that can impact your home from the basement to the roof.
The Dangers of Clogged Gutters
If you neglected cleaning your gutters in the fall, you probably had ice dams over the winter. This excess weight may cause them to pull away from the fascia. When heavy rains come, the water will overflow both the front and back of the gutter. When water goes down the back of the gutter, your fascia becomes saturated and possibly damaged.
The water that flows over the front of the gutters will end up in you landscaping which may harm the delicate plants below. If it rains enough the water may pool against your home damaging your siding, or worse, ending up in your basement or crawlspace causing flooding or water damage.
What to Look For
The biggest thing you want to look for is debris that is clogging your gutters from doing their job. If they’re clogged, clean them. As for the gutters themselves, you’ll want to make sure that each section is attached to the next section and to the house. If they’re not attached to your home, you want to reattach them. If the reason they’ve become disconnected is deteriorating fascia board, you want to call a roofing company to come and repair the fascia and reattach or install new gutters.
Also make sure the downspouts are attached all the way down. They should flow out and away from your home. You may need to add gutter accessories if yours drain too close to your home. They are available in many styles from your local home improvement store.
If you don’t have gutters or when you inspect yours you notice rust, cracks, or broken sections it may be time for new gutters.
