Summer storms come with high winds often resulting in wind damage. If you’re in an area where we’ve experienced one of the more violent storms this summer, you should be checking your home’s exterior after every one. It only takes a few minutes and may save you from expensive water damage. You should check your roof, siding and gutters after every big storm and at least once a month.
Wind damage most often shows itself on your roof. Although many new shingles are able to withstand wind in excess of 100mph, that doesn’t mean they always will. A strong sustained wind can cause damage to even the best roof. You should look for these signs:
- Misaligned shingles
- Bent shingles
- Curled shingles
- Missing shingles
Wind damage is covered under most homeowners’ insurance policies so be sure to report the claim before your roof repair company does any work.
Aluminum and vinyl siding are most susceptible to wind damage. If you notice a panel of your siding doesn’t look flat or isn’t properly aligned, you may have wind damage. Another sign is if you hear a thumping against your house in the wind. That means your siding is no longer affixed properly and could come off and at the very least water is able to get underneath.
The most common form of wind damage to gutters is when flying debris catch on them and pulls them away from the home. Damaged gutters are one of the easiest things to spot. They also may signal bigger issues and warrant calling a professional to inspect and repair all the damage to your home.
