If it’s time for a roof replacement, you’re going to have many decisions to make. The right new roof comes down to personal taste, your home’s color and style and your budget. Because most homeowners in Franklin and Greendale choose asphalt shingles, we’re going to focus on those as we discuss the choices you’ll need to make for your new roof.

Shingle Style

Although the material is asphalt, that doesn’t mean you don’t have options when it comes to style. There are three main categories of asphalt shingles, each with different pricing and features.

  • 3-tab – For decades this was the most popular option. It’s the most budget friendly one and generally lasts about 15-20 years depending on maintenance and the weather. These are defined by the fact there are three tabs or shingles to each shingle strip.
  • Architectural – Growing in popularity for their increased durability over 3-tab and their dimensional appearance, they are sometimes called dimensional shingles. Rather than looking flat and straight, they have different angular cuts creating the look of shake style shingles.
  • Designer – Although different manufacturers call their designer lines by different names, these shingles come in specialty styles including scalloped, diamond and u-shaped for a designer look on your roof.

This is perhaps the most personal of all the options. For some, they want their roof to simply blend in and they choose something similar to the color of their home. Other homeowners like the traditional black roof. The best way to choose a color is to look at the color of your home. If it’s neutral and almost bland, consider a shingle with some color. If, on the other hand, your home has lots of color, look at a neutral tan or grey. Unless you’re at the mercy of an HOA, you will have many options no matter what shingle style you’re considering.

The shingle features can add to the budget, but can save you in the long run. Some options as far as features for shingles include wind resistance, impact or hail resistance, stain fighting properties, and cool roofing. If you’re looking at any of these for your new roof, you will end up paying more for that type of shingle. On a positive note, these shingles with special features often come with a longer warranty than basic ones. They also may save you on your homeowner’s insurance.
