Although fall just arrived, you may want to get started on some home maintenance tasks that should be done before winter. The Old Famer’s Almanac and Climate Prediction Center have similar predictions for the upcoming season. Here’s a hint: If you’re a fan of cold and lots of wet precipitation, you’ll be happy. However, if your home isn’t ready for the winter weather, you may regret it sooner rather than later.

1.     Get Your Roof Inspected

A roof inspection will help ensure that your roof is ready to withstand winter weather. If there are issues, your roofing contractor can make repairs that will prevent roof leaks and water damage. Once there is snow on your roof, it’s too late to make a repair.

2.     Check Your Attic Insulation

If you don’t have sufficient insulation, you could be wasting money on heating. You may also develop ice dams which can cause roof and gutter damage. If you’re not sure how to check yours, ask your roofing contractor if they can also evaluate yours and add insulation if yours is insufficient.

3.     Caulk Your Windows

Although you don’t need to caulk every window every fall, you should check every window twice a year. Cracked, broken or missing caulk can lead to heat loss and water leaks. It’s easy and you can get all the tools you need at your local home improvement store.

4.     Inspect Your Chimney

If yours is a real chimney, make sure it’s been cleaned an inspected by a chimney sweep before your first use. Many homeowners in new construction homes with ventless fireplaces still have a chimney. Older homes where the chimneys are no longer in use also have them. Exterior chimney inspection is essential whether you use yours or not. Your roofing contractor may be able to do this if they have masonry experience.

5.     Clean Your Gutters

It’s a bit premature to do this task now. However, make sure to do it before the first snowfall. When your gutters clog and snow and ice try to melt, that’s when ice dams form, even on homes with proper insulation. Ice dams lead to loose gutters and property damage. While you’re on the ladder cleaning them, make sure they’re firmly affixed to the home.
