If it’s time for a roof replacement, you may be looking for a roofer. If you’ve never had to deal with a roofing company before, you may be wondering how to hire the best one. There are some questions you should ask every prospective contractor you’re considering before giving them the job that will help ensure that you have a good experience. Here are out top three.

1.     Are You Insured?

Roofing is one of the top ten most dangerous industries because of the hazards on the job. From climbing up and down ladders to walking around a roof and using a nail gun at such a quick pace, there are plenty of injuries. If you want to avoid potential liability, make sure the roofer you hire carries both workman’s compensation insurance and liability insurance. If you have any doubt about the truth of their answer, ask to see their certificate and call their agent to make sure the policies are active. And although roofing is a higher risk home repair, we would recommend you always asking every contractor about their insurance status.

2.     How Long Have You Been in Business?

And perhaps specify that you want to know how long they’ve been in business under their current name. This is a very different question than how much experience do you have. Most owners of a roofing company began working for another roofer and then opened their own company. They may have decades of experience roofing but little running a business. Both answers matter. You want a roofing company with experience but also one who has been around under the same name for more than a few years. The longer the company has been in business, the higher the likelihood they will be around for years more to honor their workmanship or installation warranty.

3.     Are You Factory Trained?

Some roofers take the time and invest in their team by taking part in factory training. This helps ensure that whichever brand roofing you choose, its installed using manufacturer’s best practices. Why is this important? If the roof isn’t properly installed and you have an issue with the shingles due to a manufacturing problem, they may not honor their warranty because you chose an unqualified installer.
